Nissan recalls SUVs in U.S. and Canada

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

Although there has been no reported incidents, the Japanese automaker Nissan Motor Company remained composed and humbled itself to immediately take back as much as 420,000 Nissan units that have fuel tubes, which have been believed to become rusted or worn out during the colder seasons.

Nissan Pathfinder

Infiniti, which is a luxury brand of Nissan, and the Nissan Pathfinder, which were bought starting 1997 to 2001 in the United States and in Canada, were the ones being recalled by the company. Roughly 370,000 of these Pathfinder and Infiniti sport utility vehicles were sold or are currently being used in the colder states in the U.S. During winter, roads are being salted to lessen or remove altogether the presence of snow, which causes slippery roads and eventual accidents. Unfortunately, the combination of snow, salt, and water is actually bad for vehicles because this could damage the external metal Nissan Parts of the vehicle, in particular, the fuel tube. Once the tubes for the engine becomes rusted, a possible leak is inevitable. Once the tubes start to leak, there is a possibility of unfortunate accidents like fire. This incident would surely affect the other Nissan Parts equipped in both sport utility vehicles.

Infiniti

According to Fred Standish, who is the Nissan spokesperson, to date, there has been no reported incidents of fires, which has something to with the corroded fuel tubes. He also added that towards the end of November, Nissan dealers will be recalling these units and will refurbish the possible affected Nissan Parts like the fuel filler tube. The upgraded tube for the engine will now have an efficient coating that will be able to offset the formation of rust.

These muscled Nissan-produced vehicles were sold in about 22 states in the United States, such as Rhode Island, District of Columbia, New Jersey, Kentucky, West Virginia, Vermont, Maryland, Connecticut, New York, Illinois, and, Iowa, amongst others. In Canada, on the other hand, a total of 45,000 Nissan units will be recalled by the company.

Nissan’s Green Program Result

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

Japanese car maker Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. has recently announced its progress report for its recycling efforts for the 2006 fiscal year. Nissan was able to recycle almost 100,000 tons of automotive waste during the period of 2006, making them at least nine years ahead of legal requirements for environmental protection by the motor industry.

The Japanese automaker has also exceeded its own target for 2010 that’s set forth by its own Nissan Green Program. The progress report made concentrated on three key areas which included Automobile Shredder Residue, Airbag-related components, and Fluorocarbons.

Nissan was able to recycle 95,240 of 128,827 of automobile shredder residue recovered from 635,440 vehicles in 2006. The recovery ratio was 73.9 percent and so it exceeded the 70 percent recovery ratio that’s regulated by law and with this, Nissan has already complied with the 2015 requirements.

Nissan also sports high scores on its environmental treatment for the airbag-related components and fluorocarbons. Nissan actually plans to accelerate its recycling efforts to achieve a 95 percent average on its recovery for end of life vehicles by 2010.

Toru Hasegawa, Managing Director at Nissan Middle East Fze, said, “For Nissan as an automaker, raising the recovery rate of end-of-life vehicles remains a high priority. Our aim is to contribute to the creation of a sustainable automobile society through environmentally friendly recycling. To achieve this, we aim to facilitate the implementation of the 3Rs - reduce, reuse and recycle-in both design and development.”

To continue with their commitment on its Nissan Green program, Nissan will maintain its efforts to attain the ultimate recovery ratio of 100 percent, recycling all materials from end-of-life vehicles and convert them to usable resources.

Enhancement on Nissan’s Micra

Friday, September 14th, 2007

For the 2008 model year of Nissan Micra, one of the most celebrated and loved small cars in the auto market nowadays, the model will undergo revamp to modify its styling, add some Nissan parts to it and a new grade structure. All these will add to Micra’s value for money proposition. The same upgrades as the Micra hatchback will be given to the Micra Coupe-Convertible (C+C), and they will both be available for sale on the 1st of October.

Nissan will be celebrating its new model line-up by offering a special edition to would-be buyers for a limited time. Nissan calls its special version the ACENTA + on the hatchback version. Nissan produced this special version on the basis of the ACENTA but this will be sporting a 15-inch TEKNA styled alloy wheels, in-place of the steels. This will all be for an additional price of £200 on top of the standard cost of the ACENTA.

The enhancements that Nissan Micra underwent include changes on the front grill which is now coated in chrome surround, thus, giving it a fresher and cleaner look. The front headlights also now have a less profound profile to the parking aid. This made the headlights smoother and now features a light blue tint. The ACENTA also has the sport front bumpers that are seen on the 160SR and these bumpers have also been made standard on the Micra Coupe-Convertible.

With regards to the interior, it has been provided with a more conservative color treatment. When looking at new features of the Micra, it has an audible speed limit warning. Car owners can set their own maximum speed setting through the steering wheel. Once set, this will beep if they have already reached their own maximum speed setting. This will help them by warning them to reduce speed especially if they are driving in low-speed communities such as village, school area, hospitals, and the like. The C+C will also have a Bluetooth hands-free telephone system as its standard part, and an MP3 jock socket.

The engines available for the Micra are still the same. 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6 (160SR and C+C only) petrol and a 1.5dCi diesel are available.

Nissan reveals their model line up for 2008

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

The latest Nissan models for 2008 have more electronics than ever such as iPod connectors and Bluetooth in-car communication systems to sophisticated engine controls.

The 2008 Lexus LS600h L, one of Nissan’s new models, can even observe the face of the driver and then provide an audible alert about an upcoming obstacle in the road that the driver has not been aware of.

Nissan, which operates an assembly plant in Smyrna, is adding a Rogue and a first-ever coupe version of its popular Altima in 2008.

Horsepower keeps going up with the 2008 vehicles, too, though auto engineers say they’re improving fuel economy at the same time.

Several new models, such as the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, include gasoline-electric hybrid powerplants that are more fuel efficient and have lower emissions.

And 2008 promises to bring to U.S. consumers the tiny, odd-looking smart car — yes, the name is all lowercase — boasting more than 40 miles per gallon in combined city/highway travel.

Everywhere, new safety features — particularly head curtain air bags and stability control — are being added and updated. For example, the Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible has standard side, seat-mounted air bags on all versions for the first time.

Nissan will also be adding a Rogue and an Altima coupe, a first ever of its kind.

Debuting in the fall, the Rogue is a five-passenger crossover SUV that’s slightly smaller than the Nissan Murano. With a 170-horsepower, and Nissan parts like the 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine, the Rogue is lower-powered, lighter-weight and more fuel-efficient than the V-6-powered Murano.

Offered with a choice of front-drive or all-wheel-drive, and with a starting retail price expected to be less than the Murano’s more than $28,000, the Rogue fills an important slot in the Nissan lineup.

Meantime, the sporty-looking Altima Coupe likely will boost total Altima sales to a record this calendar year. Every one of the body panels on the two-door coupe is different from those on the Altima sedan.

In fact, the coupe is shorter in height, wheelbase and overall length, though it uses the sedan’s front-drive platform underneath.

The four-passenger coupe also shares the sedan’s engines: a 175-horsepower, 2.5-liter four cylinder and 270-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6. With a starting retail price of more than $21,000, the base coupe is nearly $3,000 pricier than a base, 2008 Altima sedan, however.

Nissan’s Titan full-size pickup truck adds new long-wheelbase models that extend the beds by a foot and a half. There’s also a new Titan Pro-4X off-road grade that includes Rancho shock absorbers.

For the first time in 2008, the long-running Nissan Pathfinder SUV will become available with a V-8 engine. It’s the same 5.6-liter, Endurance V-8 that’s in the Titan, and its 310 horsepower creates the most powerful production Pathfinder in history.

Nissan expects concept car will attract computer kids

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

Nissan, one of the top Japanese car makers, has taken a futuristic all-electric mini car to the recently concluded Frankfurt Motor Show as it hopes that it will appeal to the future drivers. The Japanese car maker said that the Mixim, with a hatchback design, rakish styling, and gull-wing doors should attract gamers and other young people who spend more of their time on computers than thinking about cars. The Mixim is also a way to show that electric cars do not have to be boring.

The MIxim has an unusual setting as it has a 3+1 seating arrangement and so this svelte coupe puts the driver right up in the front of a cabin that’s fronted by a wrap-around windscreen, which aims to reflect the shape of a helmet visor. The dashboard and controls are also designed to be familiar to gamers.

Nissan has also equipped this electric car with some of its Nissan parts like its newly-developed “Super Motor” electric generator/motor rated at 82 horsepower to make its performance more appealing to youngsters. One propels the front axle and a second the rear axle, thus making the Mixim an all-wheel drive vehicle.

The automaker’s spokesman said that the Mixim has an “unusually rapid performance” for an electric runabout combined with a usefully extended range. Top speed is given as 180 kilometres an hour (112 miles per hour) and the Nissan can travel for 250 kilometres before its lithium-ion batteries need recharging.

However, the Japanese car maker said that there are no plans as of the moment to put the Mixim into series production model but the development is in-line with Nissan’s desire to make a more sustainable mobile society.

Nissan’s Next Green program – 2010 Nissan Maxima Diesel

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

During the Frankfurt Auto Show, Renault revealed a 3.0-liter diesel V-6 engine and it also confirmed that this engine will soon make its way to the US auto market under its partnership with Japanese automaker Nissan. This engine and new Nissan parts will be available in the 2010 model year of Nissan Maxima. Other details such as power and torque are not yet known but Nissan said that the engine will be meeting the strict Tier 2 Bin 5 emission standards, and it will be certified for sale in all of the fifty states.

Car and Driver Editor Editor-in-Chief Csaba Csere spoke with Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn during the 2007 Detroit auto show and he asked him about the future plan of the Japanese automaker regarding fuel-efficient cars and Ghosn said that he saw diesels and continuously variable transmissions or CVTs leading the way in efficiency in the near future.

He said, “”Diesel makes more sense in bigger cars than in smaller ones, and diesel is easier to adapt to a wide variety of vehicles than a hybrid is.”

Throughout the month of July this year, Nissan was able to record sales of 3919 units of Altima Hybrids in the U.S. That is already a considerable figure for the Japanese automaker as it is in line with their expectations, considering that the model is only sold in eight states. At this time, there are no plans of expanding the model further.

Their focus as of the moment is the development of Nissan’s own in-house hybrid technology that have Nissan parts that will contribute to its vehicles’ environmental efficiency , with a vehicle for sale by 2010 in Japan and U.S. Also, they continue to work on a plug-in hybrid.

Nissan’s hybrid technology is but one element of Nissan’s broader plan to redefine their take on new environmental, safety, and performance technologies in coming years. The Green Program 2010 is Nissan’s larger blueprint to make its vehicles, their Nissan parts, and plants more environment-friendly through a quite a number of measures like diesel and direct-injection gasoline engines, including turbocharged four cylinders come April of 2010.

There are plans to launch an electric car in Japan early in the next decade, and the field testing will begin and be conducted throughout the fiscal year of 2010. Aside from the peek at the soon-to-be diesel vehicle, Nissan also presented its Mixim model, their electric car model, during the Frankfurt Motor Show. The tiny, funky three-door hatchback uses lithium-ion batteries to power twin motors for all-wheel drive. Also due in the 2010 timeframe is a fuel-cell vehicle with a stack developed in-house.
